The Challenge

GSODA has been providing opportunities for young people to participate in the performing arts since 1928. Over decades it has nurtured a multi-generational community environment that adds to the depth, diversity and quality of life in Geelong.

It nurtures, inspires and educates young people to develop skills in theatre and creativity, creating lifelong confidence and friendships, supporting their wellbeing and mental health during youth and in the longer term.

In 2022, this multiple award-winning, not-for-profit community organisation lost its home, posing a significant threat to its continued operations. The organisation’s highly motivated volunteer base is now fatigued from operating in an environment of constant uncertainty and substandard conditions. Finding a new, permanent home is essential for the company’s long-term social and financial sustainability.

Our Approach

Early in the process a clear vision for GSODA’s new home was co-designed with GSODA volunteers and performers.

This led to the establishment of a functional design brief and the identification of three strategic pathways for securing a future home that considered short-term opportunistic approaches through to long-term strategic planning. The ambition is to secure an affordable, well-located, purpose-designed space that enables GSODA to focus on what it does best.

Impact

Our work is instrumental in GSODA’s ongoing advocacy. The feasibility study provides clarity on what GSODA needs, and pathways for achieving the vision for a permanent, purpose-built home by 2028, GSODA’s centennial year, that guarantees the present and future generations of Greater Geelong’s youth access to a thriving artistic community.
