The Challenge

Central Pier in the Docklands played a key role in Melbourne’s early maritime history and was re-purposed multiple times since its construction in 2017 until its closure in 2020 due to safety issues.

We were engaged to advise on the preparation of a long-term vision and place principles to guide the transformation of the pier precinct.

Our Approach

Our role involved a combination of research, engagement and synthesis: benchmarking celebrated examples of waterfront precincts worldwide, understanding the physical context its history and new development proposals, distillation of previous engagement activities, and the facilitation of an advisory panel of diverse experts.

These inputs were brought together into a coherent Vision and Place Principles which capture the aspirations of the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Corporation, the community and key stakeholders

Impact

The Vision and Place Principles will act as a guide to inform the future planning for the revitalisation of the area. They establish the shared foundations for what success looks like which will guide the next stages of the work.
